<< Back to Lunch | What is a Bánh Mì?Bánh Mì (pronounced BUN-mee) is a Vietnamese baguette. Introduced to Vietnam by the French in the early 20th century, the first banh mi were just bread, butter and ham or pâté -- the traditional, minimal Parisian sandwich. “Then, the Saigonese made things interesting,” said Andrea Nguyen, a writer and food historian, referring to the riot of garnishes that lifts the sandwich from good to genius. Stacked with variations of meat fillings, cured and cooked pork or tofu, pâté, pickled carrots and daikon, cucumbers, cilantro, sliced jalapenos, and a swipe of mayonnaise, banh mi are enfolded in a crisp, slim baguette. The ingredients in a Vietnamese sandwich vary most notably in the meat selections. At Saigon Sisters, we serve only top quality ingredients and bring out contrasting flavors and textures in every layer of our banh mi. |
